Mesut Ozil: Arsenal star dropped for Bournemouth clash due to ‘physicality and intensity’, says Unai Emery
Unai Emery has suggested he dropped Mesut Ozil for Arsenal’s clash at Bournemouth as the fixture was too ‘demanding’ for the German playmaker.Ozil was an unused substitute at the Vitality Stadium as the Gunners ran out 2-1 victors, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbing the winner after Josh King had expertly cancelled out Arsenal’s opener – an own goal scored by Jefferson Lerma.Ozil had to watch from the dugout as Arsenal claimed a valuable three points on the south coast1

Ozil’s absence came as something of a surprise as he had come off the back of a two-week break during the international window, and there were no suggestions prior to the match he was lacking match fitness.Asked about the decision not to play Ozil after the full-time whistle, Emery said: “We thought how we can do better in the match, a very demanding match with physicality and intensity.” He added: “But every player is important. In the beginning of the season we were speaking every day about the need to be competitive.”Ozil missed the 3-1 win over West Ham in August, when it was reported he and Emery had argued at the training ground. Emery said that the player had been too ill to train.

The Gunners have extended their unbeaten run to 17 matches but they had drawn their last three Premier League fixtures before their trip to the south coast. The win moves them to within one point of the Premier League’s top four, ahead of Sunday’s north London derby.
