This may jog the memories of one or two older readers but for those of you who weren’t around at that time, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was set up to promote international trade fairs through football.It was founded in 1955 and abolished in 1971 and in the final year of the competition, Liverpool came up against Bayern in the fourth round. Bayern were no match for Bill Shankly’s Reds with Liverpool going through 4-1 on aggregate after winning 3-0 at Anfield and playing out a 1-1 draw in Munich.Bayern fight back in Cup Winners Cup – October/November 1971
The following season in a more high stakes competition, Bayern were ready for Liverpool and beat their Fairs Cup conquerors.The two sides drew 0-0 at Anfield in the European Cup Winners Cup first leg, before Bayern ran out 3-1 winners in the second leg.

But ten years later, Liverpool put an old wrong right after securing a victory on away goals in their European Cup semi-final against Bayern.Both sides drew 0-0 in the first leg at Anfield but Ray Kennedy’s 81st-minute strike gave the Reds the lead at Munich’s Olympiastadion.Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s late goal gave Liverpool a few anxious moments but they held out and went on to win the competition after beating Real Madrid in the final.

It would be another 20 years before they would play each other again and this came in the UEFA Super Cup final following the German side’s Champions League triumph and Liverpool’s UEFA Cup win the season before.Liverpool raced to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Strikes from Hasan Salihamidzic and Carsten Jancker pulled two back for Bayern but the Premier League side held out for the win.It capped off a brilliant calendar year for Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool – winning the Super Cup and Community Shield at the start of the 2001/02 season, as well as the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in the 2000/01 campaign, or the ‘Mickey Mouse Treble’ as opposition fans frequently refer to it as.
