Played twice for United, before being loaned out to Lincoln City and Grimbsy Town before joining Preston North End.Retired early with knee injury and then took charge of former club West Brom and became Roy Hodgson’s assistant. He would then replace Steve Cotterill as Portsmouth manager in 2011.He won just over 25 per cent of his games before joining Blackpool, lasting just 57 days.Appleton managed 10 more days there than at Blackpool and took over at Oxford United.
